Diary of a Falcons Fan: Week 1

September 12, 2022

Ah the Atlanta Falcons. The time has finally come that I spent so much of 2022 looking forward to, the first week of the NFL season.

As an Atlanta Falcons fan, I endured hearing the media swear that Atlanta rostered one of the league's worst teams and that surely, they'd be a lock for a top pick in 2023's draft. My excitement never waivered though.

First year with a quarterback not named Matt Ryan in over 10 years, the return of Kyle Pitts, debut of Drake London and more. What could possibly get one more aroused?

*Cut to 4:00 P.M. Sunday afternoon*

Ah well, nevertheless. The real reason I now sit here jotting down my silly little thoughts on these silly little Atlanta Falcons is so when this time rolls around next year, I can look back and remind myself that football being back is, in fact, not a good thing and I hate it.

I was truly rejoicing at half time to. "That's the best half of Falcons football I've watched since the [REDACTED]." Drake London looked great. Cordarrelle Patterson again showed that it is truly baffling he spent the majority of his career doing nothing but returning kicks. Most of all, for the first time in years, the Falcons defense looked... good?

The Saints must be in for a down year I thought. No chance the Atlanta Falcons could be a, dare I say it, competent football team this year?

*It was at this moment Michael Thomas walked into the room, slapped me, told me to kill myself and then to thank him for providing for my fantasy team, aptly named Can't Stand Mike, this week.*

Hey so it turns out that guy is still pretty good! Quite frankly I only ever bought into the slant boy allegations because I don't like Michael Thomas, but he reminded everyone today how he put together one of the best receiver seasons ever with a combination of a decent Teddy Bridgewater and the most overrated quarterback of the last decade throwing him the ball. AJ Terrell wasn't even bad in coverage most of the time, Thomas just showed everyone that he has the best hand strength and concentration of anyone in the league when he's on it.

Taysom Hill. Y'know what. Good for him getting some run in. Social Security will be kicking in for him at any moment, hope he's got a good plan set up with AARP as well. I have to assume he's heartbroken about the Queen, I think they were pen pals when they were in college at the same time.

Good for Jameis I guess.

After the loss Sunday, I truly was questioning why I was excited for football to come back. It felt like a really bad hangover. I can only watch a group of men, whom my happiness solely relies on, give me hope just to squander it so many times. And yet, I feel pretty good about the Falcons this year still.

1-0 against the spread! four sacks! They had 18 last year! That's 22% of last years sacks in one game! Motion, there was a lot of it! Surely there's a player on the roster I noticed at no point during the game that had upwards of a 90 grade on PFF! That's four wins from Sunday right there to one loss. I am all the way back in after less than 24 hours, #RiseUp
